About B2U

B2U unlocks the potential of second-life EV batteries in large-scale battery energy storage systems without incurring repurposing costs by using its patented EPS technology.

Our proprietary technology and approach enable used EV battery packs to be repurposed into energy storage systems without modification, avoiding the expense of recycling. This translates into large-scale stationary storage projects at significantly lower installed costs and superior Levelized Cost of Storage compared to storage solutions using new batteries.

Key Achievements and Milestones in B2U's History

  • The company was founded in 2019 by Freeman Hall and Mike Stern. B2U was spun off from Solar Electric Solutions (SES) which developed 100 megawatts across 11 projects.

  • B2U has secured U.S. Patent No. 11,289,921 and has U.S. Patent Applications No. 17,675,456 and 17,827,046

  • B2U’s patented EPS technology has been in operation since 2020 in the 8MW/32MWh hybrid solar-plus-storage SEPV Sierra project in Lancaster, California. The project includes over 1,300 repurposed EV batteries and provides power and grid services to the CAISO wholesale market.

  • B2U closed a Series A equity round led by Marubeni in September 2021.

  • The 3MW/12MWh hybrid SEPV Cuyama project in Santa Barbara, California was commissioned at the end of 2023. The project includes nearly 600 EV battery packs and, like SEPV Sierra project, sells power and grid services into the CAISO market.

  • In December 2025, B2U closed a $45 million structured finance fund that will own seven of its grid storage projects.

  • The 10MW/20MWh Bexar Corilla project near San Antonio, Texas was commissioned at the end of 2025. The project includes 720 repurposed EV batteries and provides power and grid services to the ERCOT wholesale market.

  • The 10MW/24MWh Bexar Martinez project broke ground in April and equipment was delivered first week of June 2026. Once commissioned, this energy storage site will provide grid services to the ERCOT wholesale market.

  • In Q2, 2026 B2U announced its strategic supply agreement with Waymo, the leader in autonomous vehicle technology, to repurpose batteries into energy storage systems from their fleet of electric vehicles once retired from automotive use.

People

From embedded systems and controls design to power plant development and automated participation in wholesale power markets, B2U’s team delivers a state-of-the-art turnkey platform solution to efficiently unlock the value of second life EV batteries. B2U’s broad set of skills enabled the in-house development of one of our fundamental differentiators, the patented EV Pack Storage (EPS) system.

California Projects

  • SEPV Sierra

    SEPV Sierra

In operation since 2020, the SEPV Sierra project in Lancaster, California is an 8MW/32MWh hybrid energy storage system that charges from on-site solar and from the grid. Over 1,300 repurposed EV batteries are used in this energy storage system. The hybrid solar-plus-storage project provides power and grid services to the CAISO wholesale market.

  • SEPV Cuyama

    SEPV Cuyama

Commissioned at the end of 2023, the SEPV Cuyama project in Santa Barbara County, California is a 3MW/ 12MWh hybrid energy storage system that charges from on-site solar and from the grid. 600EV battery packs are deployed in this energy storage system. The project sells power and grid services into the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) wholesale market.

  • One Ten Partners Project

    One Ten Partners

B2U is converting this 2.7 MW PV project into a hybrid facility in 2024. The project is located in Palmdale, California and was developed and commissioned in 2017 by B2U’s predecessor company, Solar Electric Solutions. Once the conversion is complete, the hybrid system will have 10 MWh or storage capacity.

Texas Projects

  • Bexar Corrilla

    Bexar Corrilla

In operation since 2025, the Bexar Corrilla project in Bexar County, Texas is a 24 MWh /10.0 MW energy storage system providing capacity for ERCOT. Over 720 repurposed EV batteries are used in this energy storage system and the project continues to expand.

  • Bexar Martinez

    Bexar Martinez

We broke ground on the “Texas 10” project in April 2026. This 24 MWh / 10 MW project is in Bexar County, Texas and will provide grid services in ERCOT. Leveraging 700+ EV batteries in B2U’s innovative battery energy storage system.

  • B2U Texas 10 Projects

Texas 10 Projects - coming soon

Keep an eye out for more details on several more “Texas 10” projects expecting to break ground in 2026 and begin providing grid services to ERCOT by 2027. These innovative projects demonstrate the momentum of repurposed EV batteries as BESS.
